Overall, I am extemely pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this model MacBook Pro. I have not yet used the Thunderbolt dock simply because I own no devices that support that connection. I am very pleased with the FireWire 800 connection as well as the Mini DisplayPort which added the ability to output digital audio not available on my previous model MBP which only supported DVI. My only complaint is that the two USB ports are a little bit too close together making it impossible to connect two large thumb drives at the same time. I find having all of the connections on one side makes hooking up to external devices much cleaner and more manageable. Check the end that plugs into your Mac, not the end that plugs into your device.

My solution: OS X update to Yosemite 10.10. The larger trackpad w/ multi finger touch and sleeker design are also a plus. MacBook Pro (2010, 2011, 2012) Identify the connector used by your cable To find the right solution for your Mac, use these images to identify the connector on the end of the cable used by your device. My config: MacBook Pro (late 2011) + K272 HUL connected via Thunderbolt -> DisplayPort I even tried to switch from DP 1.2 to 1.1 but there was no option to do so in the Display-Firmware. I upgraded from an earlier model MacBook Pro with a coreduo proc essor that was not able to keep up and would crash during heavy processing tasks. The quadcore i7 processor is more than powerful enough to run multiple applications simultaneously, even taxing ones such as graphics/video rendering or professional audio recording and rendering.

I did upgrade the memory to 8GB (mostly just because I could), but even at 4GB it was a very fast computer. When I got it back from Apple, it was just like a brand new machine! It has performed flawlessly for me ever since. The seller agreed to pay for Apple to cosmetically refurbish the whole laptop. It arrived with some cosmetic damage I had not expected, so I contacted the seller. I'm always nervous buying big ticket items online, but I won the laptop at a great price. I purchased my 2011 15.4" MacBook Pro used on eBay. Mini-displayport now also carries audio, according to Apple - but. A full sized Displayport to Displayport setup carries audio just fine with this screen. DVI does not (if it did I wouldn't have this dilemma in the first place). Like having a smart & reliable little friend with you all the time. Yes, unfortunately the first response is incorrect: Displayport DOES accept and carry audio.
